In this chapter the authors try to help stakeholders find a path for transition toward more sustainable energy use in housing, based on what has been learned from the case studies in the book and more generally from the SCORE! Research programme. The authors review the problem and then provide a new framework to help actors plan change.
The framework is a three-layered model of what determines individual behaviour: physical affordances (building and equipment), people's representations and practice, and the institutional rules of the game.
The ‘System Innovation for Sustainability’ series is the fruit of the only major international research network on SCP and will set the standard in this field for some years to come. It will be required reading for all involved in the policy debate on sustainable production and consumption from government, business, academia and NGOs for designers, scientists, businesses and system innovators.
