Al-Ani, Jananne and Deville, Noski (2011) Shadow Sites II. [Film]
- Details
Noski Deville continues her collaboration as Director of Photography with artist Jananne Al-Ani, on the second film in the trilogy, Aesthetics of Disappearance: A Land Without People, focusing on the relationship of the apparently empty landscapes of the Middle East to the region's history of conflict. The powerful topographic aerial imagery is shot using large format, high resolution, HD photographic camera equipment using light aircraft. Taking the aerial vantage point of archaeological and military surveys Al-Ani’s dessert views expose a very different viewpoint of the land. Shadow Sites II seemingly bores into the landscape as one image slowly dissolves into another, reaching down deep into a substrate of diverse histories. These ‘shadow sites’, only visible from the air and at certain times of day reveal the past while inextricably linking it to the present.
