This talk, delivered at more than twenty universities across China, including the ICI Xiamen Campus, examines how artificial intelligence is changing the nature of creative practice. For generations, being a creative meant investing thousands of hours in mastering a tool, whether a brush or a software package. As AI absorbs the friction of production, the value of the creative professional is shifting from technical execution towards strategy, meaning and vision.
The talk sets out three ideas. First, a shift in hierarchy: AI is becoming dominant in Level 1 production tasks such as layout, rendering and asset generation, leaving people free to concentrate on Level 3 strategy, which means solving unsolved problems and understanding the human condition. Second, the designer as director: by 2027 the model of the solitary genius is likely to give way to the creative director managing a team of AI agents, where the most vital skill is critique, since a flawed output cannot be fixed unless one can articulate why it fails. Third, experience versus empathy: AI may have seen every image of a sunset ever made, but it has never felt the sun's warmth. It can mimic empathy without lived experience, and while machines solve for utility, humans solve for aesthetics and comfort.
The central message for students is that technology should carry the everyday and the mundane, so that their energy can go towards what is truly beautiful.
