Since the eponymous alien horrified audiences as Ripley’s antagonist in 1979, the Alien franchise has evolved to contain several films, books, games and, most recently in 2025, a television series. Within this transmedia expansion the monstrous xenomorph has multiplied and mutated, its mythology deepening to include different variations such as an ‘alien queen’, the engineers and alien-human hybrids. Though many of the actors from the franchise have attained widespread fame or cult fandom for their performances fighting against these xenomorphs, such as Sigourney Weaver and Harry Dean Stanton, the actors responsible for bringing the xenomorphs to life have received less popular and academic attention. This is because their performances have been obscured by extensive costumes and prosthetics, but also because such obscured performances are not always conceived of as ‘acting’. Certainly, different types of performers have taken on the role of the xenomorph. It was 6’10” Bolaji Badejo’s sole acting credit as the monster in 1979, dancers and gymnasts made up a horde of faster and more dynamic aliens in 1986, and David Fincher even experimented with having a dog in prosthetics for Alien 3 (1992). The tensions which emerge between prosthetics and performers in such roles have a crucial impact on the perception of the acting in both production and reception contexts. Importantly, as the franchise has progressed so too have filmmaking technologies, and thus prosthetics have been increasingly used alongside motion capture and CGI to depict the xenomorphs, prompting further questions about locating performance within practical versus digital effects. These complexities have continued to be relevant within 21st century entries into the franchise as practical effects remain highly valued by horror makers and fans for their visceral affect, and practical effects and motion capture performers can achieve higher visibility through the online circulation of behind-the-scenes materials. Tracing the chronology of the xenomorph is thus tied to identifying and closely analysing key moments of performance with a focus on physicality, including the importance of body type, movement style and different skillsets used to evoke fear in the audience. Extratextual materials such as behind-the-scenes featurettes, filmmaker, actor and effects artist interviews, and online fan and critic reviews provide further insight into the acting contributions which have created an iconic monster, shedding light on how and why they have been overlooked.
