Description/Abstract:

This article presents findings from a collaborative research project on architecture education, gender and motherhood at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) Canterbury School of Art, Architecture and Design, 1970–2003. 1 Using the institution’s archives, it presents a case study of those who studied architecture at the school in this period, and who did so as an ‘architect mother’. ‘Architect mother’ is a term coined for this research to describe female-identifying individuals who both attempted or embarked on careers in the architecture profession and who also attempted, embarked on, or explicitly rejected, motherhood or broader child-focused caring roles and responsibilities through childbirth, adoption or legal guardianship. In other words, all those for whom the question of being both an architect and mother were entwined identities and experiences.
