Description/Abstract:

Edmond Byrne’s mould blown glass aims to evoke an emotional response in the view. From his large ethereal stacked vessels to signature sprawling tableaux, Byrne’s vessels use the materiality of glass to examine the science and psychology of colour.
For the ‘Ensemble’ exhibition at the Scottish Gallery, Byrne moves in a new direction exploring the totem as a creative device for assembling ‘off cuts’ - glass parts that would normally be discarded during the making process in the workshop, collected and reassembled into exquisite
objects.

Byrnes assemblages allow him to query the intrinsic nature of his own work by exploring the aesthetic parameters, structures and space between each component in an act of reflection and re-functioning.

Due to the components being ‘off-cuts’ they possess a residual identity with their parent object in the exhibit. This creates a subtle interplay between the assemblages and the surrounding work, sharing the same genetic code, born of the same mother-object.
