In this work I am continuing to develop a body of kinetic, sculptural work, working with timber and light. The light-sources used are eight emergency services LED strobe units, seven in blue, one in red. The flash patterns can be controlled via a control system, which for the installation of the work have been set to simple blinking.
The work is designed to reflect against the walls of the architecture in a similar way that the flashing blue lights of emergency services ricochet through spaces, particularly in darkness. The work signals authority, response to emergency, but also a certain kind of art-school aesthetic in the way the LED units are mounted on conventional 2” x 2” timber struts. The work has a personal dimension as I used to work as an ambulance driver from 1996 to 1997 in Germany.
The work was developed for the group exhibition Drive Thru (during Frieze week) at the underground carpark Q-Park in Cavendish Square, London. This exhibition was partly conceived as an exhibition to be viewed solely from the inside of a car. The exhibition was curated by Peter Fillingham and Roger Clark. The exhibition brought together more than 50 artists at the lowest level of the underground car park. The work exhibited encompassed sculptures, photographs, film, painting, live performances, happenings, staged works, installations, synchronised car radio transmissions and sound works.
In this work I am following the canon of artists working predominantly with kinetic sculptural and light-based installations. Artists such as Dan Flavin (US), Jean Tinguely (CH), Janet Cardiff (US), Carsten Höller (DE), Chris Burden (US), Rebecca Horn (DE), Cornelia Parker (UK), Daryl Viner (UK), Bruce Nauman (US), Olafur Eliasson (IS).
