This is an essay commissioned for a book published to accompany the artist Rasheed Araeen’s retrospective at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (subsequently touring to MAMCO, Geneva, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead and Garage Centre for Contemporary Art, Moscow). The book includes essays by Nick Aikens, Kate Fowle, Courtney Martin, Michael Newman, Gene Ray, Dominic Rahtz, John Roberts, Marcus du Sautoy, Zoe Sutherland and Kaelen Wilson-Goldie. The focus of Rahtz’s essay is on a relatively unexamined group of works from 1968 to 1974 that occupy a pivotal position between Araeen’s early minimalist structures and his later politicized performances and installations.
