This international panel, organised by the Tate in partnership with UCA Farnham and the journal 'Photography & Culture', gathered eminent speakers to discuss the place of the vernacular in contemporary photography, the distinction between public and private, and how vernacular photography sits within museum collections and archives.
The panel was followed by the seminar 'Vernacular photography as art' on 30 November 2013, enabling participants to further explore and discuss the issues raised by the panel. The seminar investigated the issues surrounding personal and public photography, photography and the internet and social networking sites, and changing ideas of the archive and the family album. This was followed by a discussion into the way that artists have utilised found and personal photos in their artistic practice.
Kathy Kubicki gave the introductory talk, and was a speaker and convener of the panel and seminar. The other panel speakers included Geoffrey Batchen, Joachim Schmid, and Ben Burbridge.
This is the first of a three part series of events organised in collaboration between UCA, the Tate and 'Photography and Culture'.
