Heimat
Löwenstein, Heike (2009) Heimat. [Exhibition/show, Photography]
- Details
This series of pictures focuses on the personal and collective identity in relation to German history, place, memory, family and alienation. The concept of ‘heimat’ is specifically German. People are bound to their ‘heimat’, their place of birth, by childhood memories, their language,
traditions and acquired affinities. Heimat’s elliptical, ambiguous images can be seen to be operating in much the same way as a detached, distanced language. Heimat is placed within a broad spectrum of examinations of history and memory.
Heike Löwenstein’s ‘Heimat’ places photography practice as a part of the various ways in which we attempt to make sense of and reconcile the contested space of memory, history and identity formations.
A limited edition book is due to be in the autumn of 2013.
Heike Lowenstein gave a public talk about 'Heimat' at URBIS, Manchester in 2010.
