The writer discusses the work of ceramist Keiko Hasegawa. Fiercely determined to find his own way as primarily a potter of fine-art sensibilities and creations, Hasegawa left Japan so that she could build on her own ceramic training without the overarching demands and creative limitations of an employer, eventually settling in England. During her long and distinguished career, she has explored both fine-art ceramics and industrial applications of multiple orders for commercial clients around the world. Fine art and repeat tableware have been melded into one coherent approach, most particularly in her work for high-end London Japanese restaurants, as well as in bone-china gift wares for Japanese companies.
