This output is a sole-authored section within a co-authored chapter in an edited volume. It was produced as an output of the research project ‘Architecture, Design and Art Practice Training-research’ (ADAPT-r) an EU Seventh Framework Programme Initial Training Network. The project aimed to significantly increase European research capacity in creative practice research through a series of events and fellowships undertaken between 2013 and 2016 bringing together creative practitioners from across disciplines as an active network.
The edited volume combined inputs from the seven partner organisations, to present aspects of practice-based research and knowledge which reflect the specificities of creative production across cultures, territories and institutions.
The chapter ‘Spaces of Creativity’ from the Aarhus Arkitektskolen team investigates how the spatial context of creative practices shapes – and is shaped by – design processes. It brings together a photographic study of workspaces of researchers and practitioners, a theoretical framework (contributed by Holder), and a doctoral candidate’s reflection on the creative practice research context between office and academy. It questions the role of the broader spatial and cultural context in the architectural design process and how spatial configurations can influence or challenge interactions between designers, collaborators, and clients. Holder's contribution to the research develops a theoretical framework articulating how the spatial contexts of creative practice can be seen as active agents in processes of design, and, conjointly, how processes and practices of design impact upon their spatial setting.
