Description/Abstract:

‘Fogged Mirror’ is an 11-minute film with spoken performance which re-imagines the ‘miracle of the black leg’ in the myth of St Cosmas and St Damian from 13th century hagiography ‘The Golden Legend’. The saints were said to have replaced the cankerous leg of a white man with that of a black man. ‘Fogged Mirror’ considers the narrative from a black perspective, interweaving contemporary black voices in the form of personal stories of people of the 1st Windrush generation with narration from the perspective of the deceased black man in the myth.

The film was broadcast and performed with live spoken word over Zoom in the 2021 Estuary festival – originally planned as a live performance in the festival, Covid restrictions necessitated its transfer to a virtual platform.

This is the fourth collaboration between Hunt and Mavernie Cunningham, in a practice through which we aim to develop insights into relationships between contemporary black experience and historical representations of blackness.
