Barcelona Books I, II & III are a series of artist's books.
In his recent work, questions about time, memory and the particular nature of how the physicality of work affects the way we process information, are being explored through a variety of forms including paintings, constructions and artists books.
Ian was the lead researcher in ‘Generate’; a collaboration between practitioners and academics at UCA and Turner Contemporary in Margate from 2007 - 2012 a project set out to examine the significance of childrens' creativity in the context of an adult domain. The importance of embodied knowledge in the creative process emerged as a key concern and has continued to inform development in his practice.
As a consequence Ian became involved in the ‘Limber Spatial Painting Practices’ project from 2012 to 2013, a collaboration with artists and curators, Jost Munster and Cherry Smyth, securing funding through UCA and European Inter-Regional Culture led Regeneration (ICR) funding with the support of UCA Research and Enterprise. Ian worked on a number of initiatives with John Dargan and Stephane Trois Carres, Professor, Département Images Mouvement, Ecole Supérieure d’Art et Design Le Havre / Rouen. ‘Motionless Traveller’; an interactive live virtual performance/ intervention, from a warehouse in Dover to the Gallerie Synesthesie in Paris and Projection in Le Havre. Ian also worked with Stephane Trois Carres, Alain Longuet and John Dargan, in the realisation of ‘Cage Suite ESADHaR/UCA’ part of the East Kent Cultural Conversations event at UCA in 2013 and on the ‘Theatre of Operations’ project; a collaboration between UCA ESADHaR and the Ecole d'Art du Calais in 2014 and 2015.
Ian is a member of a collective called ‘Container’; a group of artists with a common interest in developing ideas through examining what a book can be or represent, from sequential narrative to sculptural form.
