The Jisc-funded Zandra Rhodes Digital Study Collection project (2011 - 2013) has brought a selection of 500 dresses and garments out of the private archive of influential British fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, and made them available openly online for use and reuse in education worldwide. This digitisation and cataloguing was also a key step to fulfil the project's aim of developing an Open Educational Resource (OER) that focuses in-depth on 25 key pieces, with accompanying primary and secondary source material in digital format.
The Digital Study Collection and OER were launched online in March 2013 for use in learning, teaching, and research. The project was a collaborative venture led by the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) in partnership with Zandra Rhodes Studio, with funding from Jisc.
In addition, the project team has set out to provide the next generation of students from the University's BA fashion and textiles courses with valuable work experience behind-the-scenes at the Zandra Rhodes fashion house, through paid internships with the project.
This paper tells the story of this collaborative venture, focussing in particular on the process of enhancing this vast digital archive of 500 garments with a richly contextual OER. It will outline the project's approach to user consultation with academic staff and students to inform the development of the OER, and the six key themes that emerged. The lessons learnt from developing the Digital Study Collection and OER are also shared.
