Description/Abstract:

Facing the Red Earth, Back to the Sky (2024 – 23’) is a three-screen moving image work exploring the small-scale garden farming within a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) near the city of Xiamen, Fujian, China. The film surveys a terrain vague, a space of mutuality and change, at the interstice between the urban and the rural. The three screens montage the layout of the space, details of the material culture of cultivation and portraits of the gardeners. A disused aqueduct from a former era of public infrastructure spans the terrain, and the film documents the impacts of nearby construction on the space.
