This paper argues that the fashion toile, usually treated as a temporary prototype and discarded once its function has been fulfilled, can be reconsidered as a material and semiotic artefact with the capacity to generate new forms of fashion meaning. Grounded in The Draft Archive (thedraftarchive.com), an ongoing practice-led project collecting discarded toiles from fashion studios, the research explores how unfinished garments may be reassembled, worn and photographed to produce an alternative sartorial and visual language. Drawing on material culture theory, phenomenology and semiotics, the article proposes that the toile occupies a productive position at the edge of fashion’s dominant system of meaning. Its unfinished state and neutrality resist the fixed identities, polished surfaces and rapid cycles of consumption that structure contemporary fashion. Through experimental styling and image making, the toile becomes a site through which value, desire and self-representation may be renegotiated. The paper ultimately suggests that the unfinished offers not only an alternative aesthetic, but also a different model for sustainability, one grounded in reinterpretation, continued use and altered practices of meaning-making.
