The work(s) in the exhibit refer to 1)our contemporary culture’s obsession with ultra-processed substances for nourishment, 2)the intricate interlacing between human and environment and 3)the changing geological processes taking place over time short and long such as erosion, rising and sinking water-levels, changing climate.

The work(s) span a link to the central plot in Riddley Walker in which characters seek to recreate gunpowder, a destructive technology from the past, that is part blamed to have caused the end of the world.

Today’s liberal capitalist culture that thrives on relentless profiteering at the cost of human and natural environments – reports estimate that 60% of animal populations have been wiped out by humans since 1970 – is similarly destructive and is contributing to apocalyptic prophesies increasingly materialising.

The novel is set several thousand years in the future following a nuclear apocalypse referred to as the Bad Time.

55 million years ago, Seasalter - Littl Salting in the novel - was covered with mangrove marshes – fossilized bits of which are scattered across today’s beach there.

About 125,000 years ago, during a warm interglacial period, much of Britain, including the whole of East Kent, was underwater.

Thuja hedges play a central role in the quintessential English landscape gardening, shaping and construction process.
