- Details
Beyond the Dance Floor offers the first critical inquiry into the relationship between design, club culture and broader international culture and creativity. Building on the editors’ pioneering work on the design and architecture history of nightclubs in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, this collection of new research will show the significant but under-recognized creativity of club culture and explore how its broader design-based interactions go beyond the dancefloor into the world outside the nightclub. Beyond the Dancefloor will assert the social, cultural, economic, and political, value of club culture by revealing its embeddedness in broader creative and cultural communities, industries and practices. The book’s original approach will make a valuable contribution to the growing body of literature on designing club culture and will have value
in disciplines including design, architecture and urbanism history, histories of music and dance, studies of youth culture, subculture, and queer culture, decolonialism, and more. It is designed to appeal to academics and students of different generations and backgrounds as well as those active in nightlife industries. The richly illustrated book will bring together a selection of 17 newly commissioned contributions by established and emerging international scholars, curators and creative practitioners from disciplines including architecture and design history and theory, urbanism, fashion history, performance, queer studies, night studies, post-colonial, anthropology and Caribbean studies, in order to reflect the interdisciplinary and rich diversity of international club culture.
