Description/Abstract:

This chapter explores the intersection between performance and science within a contemporary practice context, investigating ways in which interdisciplinary performance and the mediatisation of science can communicate scientific content, enhancing public understanding and engagement. The chapter draws specifically on a piece of international touring work, Charge, created by Motionhouse in collaboration with scientists at the University of Oxford, including Professor Dame Frances Ashcroft, between 2018 and 2019. The performance work drew upon Ashcroft’s book The Spark of Life (2013). The chapter sets out to explore the interpretation of scientific research through interdisciplinary intermedial practice, offering a discussion around methodologies of practice between artists and scientists and exploring different types of scientific understanding and experience that can be developed through interdisciplinary collaboration. In addition, through an analysis of specific sections from Charge, the chapter provides an exploration of the potential for the affordances of intermedial performance to communicate scientific meaning and through doing so presents an approach that can be used and built upon by other artists and scientists looking to collaborate creatively.
