The representation of motherhood onscreen is often problematic with mothers notable for their invisibility or their stereotypes. ‘Angels in the House’ or uncaring neglectful women. Working from both sides of the screen, this paper will investigate whether there is a link between the lack of mothers working in creative roles in the television industry and their representation onscreen. Using figures contained in the latest Skillset ‘Workforce Survey Report 2014’ with recourse to evidence from the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media combined with analysis of various television programmes, Akass and Duthie will argue that the representation of mothers onscreen is representative of the lack of women behind it.
