This new bookRoom press publication is based on a close reading of a large sample of British carte-de-visite studio portraits (1854-1868), collected by Caroline Molloy (2016-20) as part of her PhD research, that looked at the politics of representation in the photography studio. The work highlights aspects of the photography studio that conform to a conceptual framework through which socio-cultural aspirations of the sitter are experimented with and performed.
This publication was featured in a vitrine and as a publication as part of the Family and Other Ties exhibition in the Foyer Gallery Farnham.
The book was launched at Small Publishers Book Fair, Conway Hall, London 2022. Exhibited at the Family and Other Ties exhibition, Foyer Gallery, UCA Farnham, 2022, and Format Photography Festival 2023, and in the Gender and Gesture exhibition at Woxsen University, Hyderabad, India, 2023. A copy of this book can be found in the UAL and UCA library book collections.
