This chapter written by Simon Olding provides a context and a brief history to the development of the Crafts Study Centre.
The Crafts Study Centre opened in 2004 in a purpose-built museum at the front of the Farnham campus of The Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College (now the University for the Creative Arts). To celebrate the opening, eminent practitioners, curators and craft historians were commissioned to write on aspects of the Centre's long history and the key subject areas held in the collections. The foreword is by Sir Christopher Frayling, Chairman of the Crafts Study Centre from 1982-2004.
