Interdisciplinary arts research exploring theoretical frameworks that work towards a reconceptualization of the genome and epigenetics to speculate on ecologies of mind, body, the environment and evolution. The study of epigenetics is an emerging field in biosocial and biocultural studies as biologists dismantle foundational human genomic studies in heredity to re-imagine the genome as a dynamic and responsive entity that senses, apprehends and responds to environmental, biological and cultural contexts. Drawing on close family genealogical archives and research into historic institutionalised child care systems, the photo/poetic film, Remembering the Unknown, explores transgenerational epigenetic phenomena associated with the transmission of trauma and PTSD.

This research builds on Roger’s previous research in the fields of consciousness studies and embodiment theories in art and science. Based on the concept that the genome is not the sole agency in inheritance, Roger’s conceptual research and resolution explores the persistence of epigenetic trauma signatures of inherited PTSD across generations of her close family. This research examining the relationship between the imaginary and reality revealed how the reflective process practice-based research might be brought to bear on the science of epigenetics to offer new modes of visual narrative in autoethnography.

This text explores how the visual arts and life-writing narratives based on subjective accounting of epigenetic causation of intergenerational PTSD might help integrate ways of understanding people’s differing responses to traumatic life experiences towards creative, compassionate and therapeutic approaches healing.

The publication and associated conference addressed cultural, social and political issues concerned with technology, emotion and political consciousness. In the international HEI context, the research themes and methods also sought to dissolve boundaries in creative research practice and experimental pedagogies.
