Description/Abstract: | In over ninety years, of arguably the world’s biggest film accolades, the Academy Awards, there has only been one female winning the Oscar for best director, Kathryn Bigelow (2009). When you look at the number of females nominated for this category over the years it is still only in single figures (just five). Cate Blanchett president of Cannes Film Festival jury (2018) led an army of women on to the red carpet to protest that only eighty-two films directed by women have ever been selected for the festival’s prestigious Palme d’Or competition in its seventy one year history, compared with 1,645 directed by men. Blantchett demanded “that our workplaces are diverse and equitable so they can best reflect the world in which we live.” |
