In the first book ever devoted to close analysis of one of the most successful horror franchises of the last forty years, SEE!HEAR!CUT!KILL!: Experiencing Friday the 13th provides an unusual and groundbreaking look into why slashers were and are still loved by devoted fans. Instead of considering what these films say about society, culture and politics, author Wickham Clayton examines how the style of these films engages our emotions and impacts us moment to moment.
Clayton explores moments from each film in great detail to determine who we are experiencing each of these moments as. Are we a victim? Are we the killer? Are we an impartial observer? Are we coming to the movies as fans? Are we watching Part VII without ever having seen another Friday the 13th film? This book takes the reader through the ways the images, the sounds, and the editing all communicate who we see the films through. Then, Clayton considers how each sequel gives viewers, whether a longtime fan or new to the series, a ‘way in’ to the continuous story that runs through the series.
After exploring the series, Clayton shows how these slasher films do not stand separate from ‘serious’ cinema. This book provides an argument for seeing these ‘trashy’ movies as having influence and overlap with award-winning, critically-praised movies.
