Description/Abstract:

In the project Secret & Lies (referencing Mike Leigh’s film), Jessica Voorsanger was invited by Tate Modern to reinvent their community film club. She created a series of events (27 March, 22 May & 31 July 2017) exploring what we view in film, as truth is often fictitious or embellished truths. In ‘Hollywood’ drama scenarios, we question how much is fact or fiction? In documentaries, which we generally view as ‘truth’, can highlight a biased view or agenda. Each event featured an individual. The first event focused on [potential] lies by looking at ‘docudrama/biopics’ by showing the dramatically inspired Hollywood film Frida. The second event explored the meeting of [potential] truth and lies together by featuring Picasso. This event included the screening of Tim Newton’s dramatization of Picasso’s visit to Sheffield in the 1950’s entitled ‘Trimming Picasso’, as well as showing documentary footage in contrast to the Hollywood film ‘Surviving Picasso’. The filmmaker Tim Newton came to the event and was interviewed by Voorsanger. The third event focused on [potential] truth by looking at the documentary film ‘Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict’. Guggenheim was a distant cousin of Voorsanger’s. Jessica Voorsanger portrayed each of the featured artists at each event through costume. There was also a limited edition newspaper, and artwork that were produced and distributed to the audience as well as refreshments.
