James Benning’s documentaries Concord Woods (2014) - about the nature writer, civil disobedient and American Transcendentalist Henry Thoreau - and Stemple Path (2012) - about the eco-terrorist Theodore Kaczynski - show wooden replicas of their huts in the woods of the filmmaker’s land. Replica of their huts are also shown in the exhibition Decoding Fear (2015). This chapter suggests that the videos and the exhibition explore how independent humans and objects are from their environment, especially with respect to the independence of human ethics advocated by the transcendentalists.
