- Details
This exhibition introduces the concept and forms a visual context for audiences of the Darwinian Orchestra project. A series of concert performances exploring the evolution of musical instrumentation through the form of the flute, that will be performed in major concert venues across Europe through the Orchestra Network for Europe. These works will be exhibited in France, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland and Bulgaria.
The work on display spans each extreme of time encompassed in this performance, from a recital played on 60,000 year old flute created by an earlier human species to a contemporary ‘choir’ of Smartphones programmed to interact with an audience.
Under the guidance and direction of Hugh Harwood and researching and utilising images from many sources, students studying upon communication design courses at UCA Canterbury, have created a series of collages that depict varied forms and images of the flute. These images playfully challenge the hierarchy of the Symphony Orchestra.
By exploring the form of the flute, its cultural significance and its usage through a diverse range of cultures and histories.
These images have then been printed and mounted onto durable exhibition boards as double sided images. These boards have then been die cut so that they can interconnect to create sculptural forms. These forms will be determined at each venue dependent on the requirements of each distinctive site.
Hugh Harwood was creative director for this project and also conceived and instigated the creative outputs, as well as contributing image collages of his own.
There is also a published catalogue to accompany these exhibitions.
