Appointed to develop the aesthetics and multiple art interventions for the wellbeing spaces within the 3Ts redevelopment of the Royal County Hospital, Brighton. Ting gives priority to the human, emotional and spiritual needs of patients, visitors and staff. Selected for her concept and narratives to create an inclusive space, in which people can find solace and a breathing space at intense and difficult moments.
On a practical level Ting’s research investigates sustainable, germ-free, antibacterial materials combined with durability and robustness, to withstand cleaning routines and tactile interaction in highly populated, public areas. Her conceptual research led to multi-faith spaces, biometrics, materiality, Josef/Anni Albers wall works, votive offerings, acts of faith, spirituality, a Nordic church in Helsinki, Shinto Buddhist prayer ribbon tying, and ‘outside’ the colour of regency white seen on the facades of crescents in Brighton, contrasts in light and colour reflected from the sea views. The idea that these elements would mutually influence her aesthetics that allows for hope to be made physical through the artworks in the space. These collaborative works of art will help to honour an area for quiet reflection and contemplation.
In particular ‘the wave’, when Sharon’s father passed away, unexpectedly during the design of the wall, the whole thing reshaped itself through her bereavement. The Wave of Reflection wall, originally based on acts of faith and the ‘wailing wall’ now becomes an interactive artwork, currently taking form of a humanist commemorative, celebratory wall. Visitors will be invited to write thoughts, memories or messages on shapes and place them on this wall, adding human voice to the design of the wave.
The Sanctuary provides a relief alternative to the historical, listed chapel. Other artefacts designed consist of glass panels, entrance works, backlit textile hangings and alcove seating. Sharon will commission an altar & several other artworks for the wellbeing areas.
