- Details
House 2 will be a collaborative artwork that explores the relationship between sound, moving image and sculptural object. Our research in this project will continue from the work done in ‘House 1’ in continuing to explore how sound becomes the vehicle of embodied narratives when visible subject is absent from the field of perception – and how the interplay of these presences and absences can be developed to explore and express ideas around aspects of what we mean by ‘home’ – namely the experience of being grounded or groundless.
Continuing the lines of enquiry from House 1, which was shown and discussed at ‘Art and Sound’, Leicester de Montfort University in June 2017, House 2 will further enquire into notions of dwelling, departure, migration and nostalgia, and the beckoning of each of these states to one another. The planned sculptural form of the house-objects are covered with abstracted images, suggesting aspects of dwelling and its disruption, and the film and sound pieces that will be contained therein on tablets will play further on these themes.
In Cinema 2 (1985) Deleuze says: ‘in so far as they are a specific dimension, a fourth dimension of the visual image…, [sounds] trace a path full of obstacles in visual space, they do not make themselves heard without also being seen…at the same time as they make the image readable, a little like a musical score’ (Deleuze: 226).
To this end, the work uses the ways in which film presents a combination of sound, image and performance with one as ‘out-of-field’ to the other, in an interplay of Becoming.
