This case study sets out to identify the information needs and behaviours of first year Fine Art undergraduate students in relation to the strategic and pedagogical objectives of the University for the Creative Arts. The study focused on research and studio units that ran concurrently from Monday 18 January to Friday 22 April 2016. To allow for a rich description of the phenomena, a mixed methodology acquired qualitative and quantitative data during this period. As part of an emergent design, data was collected using a questionnaire, observation, interviews and citation analysis. Data was also acquired from the Unit Leader and a Studio Tutor to provide further insight.
Information literacy is not a pre-requisite for producing artwork however it is essential for academic achievement. Students are required to meet the set learning outcomes and assessment criteria. The ability to identify credible resources, critically evaluate information and synthesise findings enables students to develop proficient academic writing skills alongside a culturally informed creative practice.
The Library and Student Services department supports academic success through the provision of resources, advice and literacy guidance. Greater understanding of information behaviours can enrich provision by enhancing outreach both in the physical environment and online. Thus, contributing to achieving the department’s aim to 'encourage engagement...through targeted' communication and developing internal 'partnerships' (UCA, 2015).
Informed by creativity theory and information needs studies, this study found a marked preference for online sources. The use of printed media persists, informing both research and providing visual references, however engagement was higher amongst mature students (25+ years). Browsing behaviours were adopted by all participants to retrieve information through sifting and serendipity both online and between the library shelves. Social interactions were important for motivational purposes and information exchange. The study identified a set of Information needs and provides recommendations for service.
