Part of the book reuniting the investigations about São Paulo and Rome in their urban transformations and life practices, this chapter presents a reflection on the different roles played by different actors in the public transit: the individual car driver, the public transport commuter, the cyclist and the pedestrian. Through a reflection of the spatial and temporal dynamics governing the mobility in a big city, the investigation questions the polemic relations established in between the different subjects in the city, who become opponents or anti-subjects of one another. The work is an aftermath of previous ethnographic research about São Paulo’s green landscapes, and uses the semiotics works of A.J. Greimas about narrativity and polemic enunciates to reflect on the manners in which the organisation of public transit disentangles the links established between different inhabitants of the city, creating a false feeling of separation and individuality. The work is published in a double edition, in Portuguese and Italian, reuniting researchers from São Paulo and Rome, and disseminated in both countries, as well as international conferences in Brazil, Latin America and Europe.
