As part of Draw To Perform 3, curated by Ram Samocha, the second day of the symposium shifted from live performance to drawing workshops. Here Burgoyne presents 'stretches', a drawing workshop for 8 people. As in many elements of his performative drawings-rules; space; testing its limits whilst immersing in its absurd logic, perhaps may reveal a more emancipatory space within that logic. This workshop could be seen as a drawing game. The aim of the game is to make standard bands of marks that each time inform the next band. These bands of marks all seek to reach each number located on the periphery of the space itself.
All the while each participant is connected at their hand or foot by elastic. In the first stage of the game, they are connected to their adjacent partner (i.e number one is connected to number six and so forth), and in the second stage of the 'drawing game', all the participants are connected together with the elastic cords. When each participant makes it round all the numbers in the space they can then exit the drawing act and the space itself until only the traces of their time, endurance and the accumulative gestures are left.
Burgoyne sees 'stretches' as drawing generated by a drawing i.e. bodily gestures both make marks and also generate a shifting gesture akin to drawing also.
