Description/Abstract:
This study is a reading of Magdalene Odundo’s ceramic vessel Untitled # 10 (1995), acquired jointly by the Departments of African Arts and Decorative Arts at the Newark Museum, New Jersey in 1996. The essay reflects on the various cross-cultural sources and influences that have shaped Odundo’s work, especially the practice of the Nigerian potter Ladi Kwali. The evolution of Odundo’s distinctive formal language, in particular the swollen bellies and extended lips of her pots, is also discussed.
