This chapter is part of an anthology of critical commentaries which explores some of the central and emerging thems, issues and debates within an increasinly expansive and globalised discipline.

In this chpater the author, Chris Hunt suggests reconsideration of Heidegger's concept of authenticity. The chapter frames the notion of the authentic not as something conservative per se, but applies Zizek’s suggestion that there is another possible reading – that authenticity is ‘the basic condition of the political’. Hunt suggests that authenticity could be considered afresh as a criterion with which artists can engage in depoliticised contexts.
