The writer discusses the work of ceramist Jenny Southam, whose sculptural figures are poised between a gentle reflective gravity and an approachable, unusual humor. Southam's tableaux are enriched by a mood of serene quiet and contemplation and by sculptural references, including horses that evoke bronzes by Italian Expressionist sculptor Marino Marini. A combination of the intentionally “naive” element and the moments of serenity in which they are caught creates a gentle counterpoint that takes the sculptures away from the purely humorous, though this is frequently their starting point.
